The Corner of Bitter and Sweet Robin Palmer Books

I was already inclined to like this book, since I'm a big fan of Robin Palmer's YA fairy tale retellings and Lucy B. Parker series. But this novel is more nuanced, yet just as funny, as those. Annabelle Meryl Jackson (yes, the Meryl is for Meryl Streep) has spent most of her life taking care of her mother, actress and alcoholic Janie Jackson. She's so used to playing parent that she has no idea what to do with herself when her mother, after an incident that forces her into rehab, seems to be a new person who can, just maybe, take care of herself. Annabelle has never had a boyfriend, so when she starts flirting with a guy in their new home in New York's Hudson Valley, a massive change from the LA she's used to, she isn't sure what to do or how much of herself to show to him. Couple that with Janie taking up with her much younger costar, and there's plenty of drama.

What there also is is a look at Alateen, the support group for teenage children/relatives of alcoholics, and the support Annabelle gets from the friends she makes there. Palmer contrasts the slower way Annabelle learns to cope with her mother's instant affection for AA slogans. She paints a beautiful story about a mother and daughter who are both, in their own ways, growing up, in a sense learning some of the same lessons in different ways. If you've read Palmer's previous novels, there's plenty of pop culture references and humor here too, but also a depth that makes it stand out in the YA genre. I highly recommend it to teens and adults. It will likely have special resonance if you care about someone who's an alcoholic, but you don't have to in order to appreciate this book. While it's not a traditional "beach read," because the subject matter is by definition pretty serious, I think it would be perfectly at home amongst a stack of books on the beach. Warning: I cried at the end.

The Corner of Bitter and Sweet Robin Palmer Books Reviews

This book has a depressing yet inspiring story to tell... Although it is set in Hollywood there is a realness to the daughter that is genuine.
The author lives in the mind of this talented, often confused teenager trying to make sense of her life and relationship with her alcoholic mother and first boyfriend.
The story is a good one and the author has a good sense of humor. A good read and kept my interest.
Well written. The story was so interesting that I could not put it down. A great book for a rainy day, a fire, and a cup of tea.
When I first started reading this story it went rather slowly, so I put it down and read another book. When I went back to it I found I could not put it down, just me I guess. The girl narrating at times is quirky but as you read on you understand why she it the way she is. A great romance story, a great story of a mother and her daughter. I recommend this book.
This book is not in my normal genre of subjects, but it was recommended by a friend - and I loved it!!! I laughed out loud, I teared up a few times - I "got" it! I know a little about addiction and recovery, and I could relate to so much in both their stories! Mostly though, I was entertained by Annabelle and Janie - and I really enjoyed reading about their relationship, and all the changes it went through! I didn't want to book down because I wanted to see what happened next!! For a teen or an adult - this book is two thumbs up!!!
The Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Robin Palmer is perfectly titled. The relationship between teen Annabelle and her mother, struggling actress Janie Jackson, is indeed both bitter and sweet, and Palmer depicts its evolution in beautiful detail. The heartbreaking nonchalance with which Annabelle details her life caring for her alcoholic mother rings all too true, but perhaps the greatest surprise lies in the book's humor. This is tough subject matter, but Palmer infuses her characters - Annabelle in particular - with such wit and humor, it's an easy read with many laugh-out-loud moments. It also treats romance, from Annabelle's first love to the love lives of the adults around her, in a way that is both realistic and charming. These characters will stay with me. While I am technically not the target audience (this is a YA book, and I am fortyish), I loved it.
